To maintain a safe environment for all, we ask all students, faculty, and staff to become familiar with emergency procedures and evacuation routes at each NOCE Center.

At the Anaheim Campus, emergency procedures are posted in every classroom, and evacuation routes are posted at each elevator for the corresponding floor.

To promote emergency preparedness, the Anaheim Campus conducts emergency drills and uses fire-rated doors in all classrooms.

Emergency Drills

NOCE participates in three emergency drills each year: The Great ShakeOut (Drop, Cover, and Hold), Evacuation: Fire Safety in the fall, and the Active Shooter Response drill in the spring. Periodically, NOCE will participate in additional drills or exercises.

  • Evacuation: Fire Safety

    Evacuation Guidelines for Students:

    When evacuating the building, students must follow instructions from their teacher or a NOCE staff member.

    • Stairs Only: Everyone must use the stairs when descending to the first floor; elevators are off-limits.
    • Take Valuables: If re-entry to the building is postponed, all students should take their valuables.

    Evacuation Procedures for Students and Staff with Disabilities:

    If students or staff can’t use the stairs during an evacuation because of a disability, they can stay in the stairwell. Report this to a floor marshal at the evacuation site.

    Stryker chairs are located in the west stairwells near the main elevators on floors 3 to 10. Trained teachers and staff are allowed to use Stryker chairs to help any injured or disabled people safely go down the stairs in an emergency.

    Evacuation Procedure for Anaheim Campus

    All students, staff, and faculty members are to evacuate to the Lot 3 Parking area of the Anaheim Campus. There are signs in Lot 3 that show where each floor should gather. Faculty and staff will take attendance and stay with their respective classes at the Lot 3 evacuation site until the Incident Commander issues the “all clear” signal, confirming it is safe to return to the building.

    Fire Safety Rules for Classroom Doors at Anaheim Campus

    Classroom doors at the Anaheim Campus are fire-rated. Fire-rated doors help keep fire and smoke from moving to other areas. Using a doorstop or any other object to keep doors open breaks fire safety rules. Classroom doors must stay closed at all times, as required by the Anaheim City Fire Marshal.

  • The Great ShakeOut (Drop, Cover, and Hold)

    Each October, NOCE participates in The Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill to practice response and prepare in case of a major natural disaster or emergency. The California Community Colleges, along with national and state government offices, have identified the Great Shakeout as a priority.

    Information is sent in advance of the specific date(s) and time when the drill(s) will take place. Faculty and students will discuss earthquake safety procedures in class before and/or after the event.

    • The specific NOCE Center will inform the campus community if an evacuation drill will also take place.

    The NOCE Campus Communications Department will often utilize the drill as an opportunity to test the emergency alert system.   • Active Shooter Response

    NOCE participates in campus-based emergency drills to practice lockdown and active shooter response. Each NOCE Center will participate in separate drills on various dates in the spring semester.

    The drill is initiated and ended through announcements and when directed, students and staff on campus will be directed to shelter-in-place/lockdown, view an educational video on active-shooter situations, and then discuss preparation methods in their classrooms and offices. Everyone on campus is expected to participate.

    Prior to each of the drills, the Office of Campus Communications will test the emergency communications system. Faculty, staff, and students will receive a text message, voice message, and e-mail. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to update their contact information in MyGateway to assure delivery.
