A Historic Milestone for NOCE

For the first time in NOCE’s more than 50-year history, North Orange Continuing Education proudly seated an official Student Trustee to represent NOCE students at meetings of the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) Board of Trustees. This historic achievement reflects NOCE’s ongoing commitment to student voice, leadership, civic engagement, and shared governance. In 2024, NOCE conducted a special student election to select its first Student Trustee — marking a new chapter in institutional history and ensuring that NOCE students have a seat at the table in districtwide conversations that shape the future of education.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the NOCCCD Board of Trustees and Chancellor Dr. Byron Clift Breland for their leadership, advocacy, and support in making this opportunity possible for NOCE students. NOCE also thanks the ACS WASC Visiting Team for their encouragement during the 2023 accreditation site visit regarding the importance of student voice and representation in shared governance at the highest level within NOCCCD, the Board of Trustees. The establishment of NOCE’s first Student Trustee position reflects NOCE’s commitment to continuous improvement, student engagement, and inclusive leadership.

The Role of a Student Trustee

Student Trustees serve as student leaders, advocates, and ambassadors for NOCE students. They work closely with the NOCE President and campus leadership to help elevate student perspectives, share student concerns and ideas, and support initiatives that strengthen the student experience.

Impact and Leadership:

  • Attend NOCCCD Board of Trustees meetings as the official student representative for NOCE
  • Represent NOCE diverse student body by attending the NOCCCD Board of Trustees
  • Gather feedback, ideas, and concerns from students and help communicate those perspectives to campus leadership
  • Serve as an advocate for student success, access, and opportunity
  • Adhere to NOCE’s commitment and culture of continuous improvement, student engagement, and inclusive leadership
